Read moreOne aspect of the travel experience that often surprises travelers is the local attitude toward tipping. In some countries, it's an everyday practice, while in others, it's a cultural faux pas. Then there are those countries where tipping falls somewhere in between, leaving you wondering what's expected.
In this guide, we'll walk you through the tipping etiquette of Costa Rica to help you navigate your visit smoothly. Additionally, we'll offer valuable tips on how to get CRC in cash in Costa Rica, so you can focus on soaking up the sights, sounds, and flavors without the stress of financial hiccups.
We highly recommend opening a Wise account for free to access 10 foreign account details, 40+ foreign currency pots, and fee-free ATM withdrawals up to $100 per month.
You'll be able to hold local currency just like a local and spend it with the Wise travel debit card, which has zero foreign transaction fees. Without fail, I use Wise for all of my travels abroad.
Is Tipping Expected in Costa Rica?
Tipping in Costa Rica is not a strong cultural custom, although restaurants often include a service charge of 10% in the bill. You can tip an additional sum if you enjoyed excellent service. It's also fine to tip in either colon or US dollars. For reference, $1 roughly equals 500 colon (although this will fluctuate).
Tipping in Restaurants, Bars, and Cafes
When dining out in Costa Rica, service charges are often included in the bill at 10% (this is in addition to the 13% sales tax). However, some restaurants do not include the service charge in the bill. In these cases, its common to add the 10% tip yourself.
When visiting bars and cafes, rounding up the bill is a nice gesture if the service was great. However, its generally not expected — especially if the bill automatically includes that 10% service charge.

Do You Tip Hotel Staff in Costa Rica?
For hotel staff in Costa Rica, tipping is expected by service staff and other workers in the tourism industry. As a suggestion, you should tip porters $1 per bag, valets $1 for parking, and housekeepers $2 per day.
Tipping Taxis and Tour Guides in Costa Rica
For taxi drivers in Costa Rica, tipping is generally not customary for short rides. For longer rides, consider tips between $2 to $5.
Tour guides in Costa Rica will expect a tip for tours, especially for adventurous outings and all-day tours. It is acceptable to tip $5 if you are in a small group. Consider tipping $10 to $15 if you are in a larger group (4 or more).
Practical Tips for Tipping in Costa Rica
By following these tips, you'll optimize your cash transactions in Costa Rica, minimize fees, and enjoy a smoother travel experience:
- Withdraw Cash With a Travel Debit Card: Choose a travel debit card without international transaction fees that allows you to hold local currency and withdraw cash like a local. These cards typically offer fee-free ATM withdrawal allowances, making them a convenient and cost-effective option for accessing cash while traveling in Costa Rica.
- Stay Within Fee-Free Allowances: Many travel debit cards provide fee-free ATM withdrawal allowances per month. To avoid additional fees, try to stay within this allowance when withdrawing cash.
- Opt for Local Currency Transactions: When making purchases or withdrawing cash in Costa Rica, you'll be prompted to pay in CRC or your home currency. Always choose to pay in the local currency (CRC) rather than your home currency to avoid dynamic currency conversion (DCC) fees. DCC will result in terrible exchange rates and additional charges, so opting for local currency transactions ensures you get the best exchange rate.
- Avoid Credit Card Cash Advances: Steer clear of using credit cards for cash withdrawals, as they incur cash advance fees and higher interest rates (APR). Cash advance APR is also higher than purchase APR.
